Dwell features Dayton house

We are always happy to see modern design taking the Midwest, and even Ohio by storm. This month, Dwell magazine features a great modern urban infill house in the Dayton, Ohio Fairgrounds neighborhood, by architects Rogero + Buckman Architects. Check out the article at dwell.com

Wordle

Wordle is a word generation program that creates "word clouds" based on a sample of text you provide, the URL of a blog that has RSS feeds, or delicious users tags. You can change the typeface, color, layout. It's an interesting concept that reminds us of typography studies.

UMS - 20 Years

We keep finding such great childhood memorabilia. This is a cast photo from the Union Music School production of the Wizard of Oz. July 1988. Can you spot the HYALINE member? Hint, wearing a Statue of Liberty T-Shirt, with the profile of the NYC skyline (including the WTC towers). What creative thoughts were going on behind the apparent heat exhaustion?

Shoe animation

Rachel found a whole bunch of Barbie's shoes in the basement the other day and decided to mess around and do some stop motion tests. This could spark some potential shorts.

Beautiful Losers

Beautiful Losers is film about underground artists who were heavily influenced by the skate, punk, graffiti, hip hop cultures in the early to mid 90s. Some of these artists had little or no formal art training, yet blossomed into an art movement of their own, pioneers of urban street art influencing art, fashion, music, and pop culture. We are anticipating the release of this movie in theaters. It looks awesome! Check out the trailer on the official site for Beautiful Losers.

Digital Signage Tokyo JR Station

JR (Japan Rail) East has installed a series of 65" LCD displays in the Tokyo station concourse for advertising testing. The displays are aimed to replace traditional static poster advertisements. While displays in public spaces is nothing new, the use of such a large and HD capable display is significant. The advertisements are wirelessly updated and transmitted from media hubs located in the vicinity of the screens. Thanks to Engadget for the link.

PES loves food, and so do we!

We had heard of PES before, but didn't know PES was responsible for so many great shorts and mainstream commercials. Not only is this guy (Adam Pesapa) amazing at stop motion animation, his brilliant use of seemingly unrelated objects (related only by color, texture, and shape rather context) paint an amazing, grand, big picture that you would have never imagined.

Instant Origami

For a quick second we were offended by this spoof of the art of origami (because Rachel takes pride being obsessed with the art of paper folding, even if some origami objects took more than 10 tries to perfect). But this really is a witty interpretation of the meticulous process of origami. We're not sure if the story behind the idea is 100% true (whether said person was really guided by Buddhist monks from China and Japan). Either way, Instant Origami is clever.

NYC 311 graphics in DIN

hyaline was in Manhattan a few weeks ago, and we were happy to see some great use of our favorite typeface DIN for some of the NYC branded in-subway car informational posters. Bloomberg has brought about a great brand image to the city's nyc.gov portal as well as their 311 information center. We also love the clean lines of the graphics against the safety yellow!

Evolution of a Logo

Many companies have been refreshing their corporate identities by creating head turning logos. Many times "head turning" is good innovation. Other times it is just plain awful. The latest American company to rebrand is Walmart. They revealed their new sunburst inspired identity at the end of June. While Japanese telecom NTT DoCoMo neutralized their identity just this past week. Check out the Article at BusinessWeek.
